It’s one big “thank you” to their fans. In 2007 R.E.M. played five straight nights at the Olympia Theater in Dublin, testing out new songs that would later appear on their album Accelerate. The Irish mini-residency was filmed for a DVD release that is finally here, in the form of Live At The Olympia, and fans are over the moon.

…what makes “Live at the Olympia” (**** out of four stars, out Tuesday on Warner Bros.) unusually compelling is that all 39 songs on the twin CD-set were captured two years ago during a five-night stand of working rehearsals in Dublin, Ireland, where the band road-tested new material and tore through highlights from its stellar catalog.
This is not a live album of greatest hits. It doesn’t really feel like a live album, either. It feels more like R.E.M.’s gift to its most diehard fans.
For five nights, between June 30 and July 5, 2007, the band performed at the Olympia Theater in Dublin. The purpose was to test out material that would eventually appear on the album Accelerate, released in early 2008.
