Though Matchbox 20 had a disk out and a huge year of touring in 2008, we haven’t heard from the solo Rob Thomas since 2005’s Something to Be, his first solo album. Like that record, cradlesong is an ambitious collection of radio-ready tracks sure to put Thomas on top of the charts once again.
The single Her Diamonds is out now and winning over a new generation of fans – some of whom never knew a world without Lonely No More (or 3 A.M. for that matter).

THE SUN

Flirting between his band MATCHBOX TWENTY and his solo career, Rob says he feels at home with either.
Currently he’s in solo mode, with his new album Cradlesong released today.
The German-born singer’s first album without his bandmates, Something To Be, went straight to No 1 – the first time this has been achieved by a male artist from rock/pop band in the American Billboard chart’s history.

EXPRESS NIGHT OUT

What is more interesting, though, is Thomas’ ability to maintain a solo persona distinct from that of his band. Matchbox 20 existed as a faceless entity for years, until Thomas’ “Smooth” collaboration with Santana gave him an individual identity — and a ridiculous amount of radio airplay. Thomas didn’t jump into a solo career immediately (or permanently: M20 still tours and records), and when he did, the sound was notably different from M20. It might not be exactly “solo”, but he was wise to brand it separately.
