by WAKEY!WAKEY!

Get ready to hear the name Mike Grubbs a lot this year. Grubbs is the creative force behind Wakey!Wakey! and is also a musician-turned actor. He turned a guest spot on the CW drama One Tree Hill into a full-time gig for 2010 and will soon be seen regularly as “Grubbs” on the series which airs Monday nights. Street Date caught up with Mike Grubbs to ask the vital questions about his music, the show, and to play a brutal game of “Who or Who?”.

SD: What should viewers expect from your character on One Tree Hill this season?
MG: I think it’s gonna be a really exciting close to the season. I can’t go into specifics, as I don’t know most of them, but I can say you’ll see Grubbs develop considerably!

SD: What does it mean to you to have your music become such a big part
of a hit show like this?
MG: To me personally, it means a huge validation of my art, and the chance to really focus on it, which is huge. On a broader level it allows us a direct line into millions of homes around the world, where we can hopefully become a positive part of peoples lives. It’s an amazing feeling and we’re really lucky.

Now let’s play a little “Who or Who?” You’re put in a room and forced to make some tough decisions, and there can only be one answer. Who do you choose??

SD: Peyton or Brooke (characters from One Tree Hill)?
MG: I’ve never actually met Hillary who plays Peyton, so I’ll have to go with Brooke. Not to mention Sophia Bush (who plays Brooke) is one of the sweetest people I’ve ever had the fortune of knowing.

SD: Brooklyn or Manhattan?
MG: I love you Manhattan, really I do. But cabs pick me up during rush hour and without asking just head for the Williamsburg Bridge. Brooklyn is my home, and my heart.

SD: Last one — Bonnaroo or CMJ?
MG: I’ve seen a million CMJs and I’ve rocked ‘em all. Therefore, my sights are set on the mighty Bonaroo. Hope she’ll have me.

POP TARTS SUCK TOASTED

This is gonna come off sounding like an insult, but it is meant as anything but- Wakey! Wakey! is gonna ending up being this generation’s Billy Joel or Elton John. I’m sure a few of you are taking that as, “oh, he’s gonna be some obscenely catchy, pop garbage”, but realize before you infer words like that from me that I am a huge fan of both Billy Joel and Elton John. Both have spent the last 40-years or so crafty some of the catchiest, most fantastic pop-rock songs a piano could bear, and should be respected as such. More often they are maligned as standard Top 40 crap, but that’s mostly from rock snobs from my perspective.

New York based singer-songwriter Mike Grubbs aka Wakey!Wakey!, performed his moving piano-driven single “Brooklyn,” on The CW’s hit show One Tree Hill on Monday night.
Mike Grubbs is no stranger to the show, having had his song “War Sweater” featured during last season’s finale.
The season capping usage was so well-received that the One Tree Hill writers decided to invite Grubbs to join the cast.
Earlier this season, he was introduced to the universe of the show (under his own name, no less!) as the new bartender at the show’s famed music venue, The TRIC.
